South Carolina: Two Bills in Columbia Need Your Support!Mar 12th, 2010 10:42

Due to a legislative reporting error, H 4220 was not heard on Thursday, as originally intended. H 4220, introduced by Representative Mike Pitts (R-14), would permanently establish the tax holiday on firearms sales on the weekend following Thanksgiving, which is known as the Second Amendment Weekend. This bill should be taken up in two weeks, due to the General Assembly focusing its attention on the state budget next week. We also hope that the House Judiciary General Laws Sub-Committee will be able to take up H 3994. H 3994, introduced by Representative Garry R. Smith (R-27), would prohibit the establishment of any rules that would forbid the storing of firearms in a locked vehicle in parking lots.

Vermont: Ammunition Bill DefeatedMar 12th, 2010 10:40

House Bill 484, a bill that had the potential to ban the sale and use of virtually all ammunition in Vermont by requiring that the Secretary of Natural Resources to set up a program to identify and ban the distribution of certain toxic chemicals, was defeated in the House Fish, Wildlife & Water Resources Committee. Due in part to an outpouring of opposition from sportsmen, the original far-reaching bill was replaced with a resolution asking Congress to take action to amend the Toxic Substances Control Act of 1976 to require broader testing and regulation of chemicals. Please continue checking your e-mail and www.NRAILA.org for updates on other pending legislative issues.

Massive Colorado Wilderness Proposal Threatens Hunter Access and Wildlife HabitatMar 12th, 2010 09:47

H.R. 4289, sponsored by Representative Diane DeGette (D-01), would designate 850,000 acres of additional land in Colorado as Wilderness Area. In light of the fact that all mechanized means of transportation, including bicycles and game carts, are prohibited in Wilderness, this would dramatically curtail hunter access to these vast areas. In addition, Wilderness designation ends virtually all active wildlife and habitat management methods employed by state and federal biologists on all other lands. This could not come at a worse time for Colorado with the forest devastation being caused by the pine beetle. Wildlife officials must retain all means necessary to combat invasive species and actively manage for wildlife and forest health.
